Somewhere around here I reported my results with various sizes of SS media from 3/161/2" diameter spheres, using a 4" diameter mill jar to mill the charcoal. The potassium nitrate grinds better with the larger 1/2" media. The sweet spot for charcoal in my rudimentary testing was 5/16" diameter.

Shop grade BBQ charcoal, is really slow, and can be only used for stars like C6, C8, and TT. Also it can be used for 6/3/1 rocket fuel, but might require serious ballmilling. BP with sulfur is much faster than sulfurless black powder, so getting sulfur would be best. Ballmill it for long enough (depends on the mill), then granulate it.

Now if the OP is wanting fine powder for a rocket engine, I don't know if corned powder will work as well. Another thing, when pressing the milled black powder(to break it with a hammer to make corned powder) if you so choose that method, moisture is always added, both for safety and the integrity of the "puck" of black powder produced.

I have never had a, " little mill" but once you get a mill dialed in with the correct media and charge with (dry) chems it doesn't take long to mill powder to it's peak power. some have tested powder every 1/2 hour and found that a correct mill will get it done in 2 hours. That's about what I let mine go. give or take a few.

I've made some pretty good black powder using a coffee grinder and porter porter and pestle, but I was looking into getting a ball was going to get one of the cheap 70 6lb rock tumbler and modify it per skylighter's directions, but I would still need to get media to fill it half full, 200 1/2" balls.
Posted 28 August 2016 05:37 PM. It's hard to prove that glass sparks, except finding a reference to it's piezoelectric properties. But that's only part of the problem. Glass is brittle and will flake off, and ground glass is a wellknown frictionincreasing additive. And either way it's too hard, increasing the risk of impact ignition.
